First, it cannot accept deposits or progress payments for a job; payments can only be made against an existing invoice. While this might not be a problem for some, it created significant issues for me. Once a payment is applied to an invoice, the invoice is "locked" and cannot be modified. This restriction becomes problematic when a customer wants to add or remove a service from their project, or if I want to apply a discount for any reason. The workaround suggested by Patriot—using a journal entry to receive payments (to a bank account but not directly to a customer) and later deleting this journal entry to apply the payment to an invoice created at the end of the job—is completely impractical. The payment and the final invoice would often occur in different years and accounts receivable reports would become meaningless. > > As I said, the customer experience was great.
